Shape the Human-Agent Future
With Us

Join a lab tackling real-world, high-stakes problems — where your research helps decide how humans and intelligent agents will live and work together.

Why Join

What You Get at HAA Lab

A Track Record That Opens Doors

Research from the lab and our collaborators has earned the ANLP Outstanding Paper Award (top 2%), the Hon Hai Technology Award, TSC Thesis Awards, and national scholarships, with work appearing at top venues such as ACL, EMNLP, SIGIR, and WWW.

A Truly International Lab

English is our working language. Members and collaborators span Japan, Taiwan, Germany, the UK, India, Korea, France, Thailand, and so on — and the network keeps growing every year.

Mentorship With Community Access

Your PI founded ACL SIG-FinTech, co-chairs NTCIR-19, and serves as Senior Area Chair at ACL and EMNLP — you'll be introduced to the community from day one, not after graduation.

Research That Matters

We work on high-stakes problems — financial decisions, misinformation, regulatory compliance, and biomedical applications — with real datasets, industry collaborations, awards, and national media coverage.

The HAA Moment

We chase the "はぁ〜" — that sigh of relief and satisfaction when human-agent collaboration truly works. Research here is about creating moments people are grateful for.

Tokyo, at the Heart of It

Based at the National Institute of Informatics in central Tokyo — one of Asia's leading informatics institutes, steps from Jimbocho and the Imperial Palace.

FAQ

Questions, Answered

PhD students enroll through SOKENDAI at NII. Before applying, email chen@nii.ac.jp with your CV and a short statement of research interests aligned with our three pillars — we'll help you scope a strong proposal.
Yes. If your university has an MOU with NII, apply through the NII International Internship Program; otherwise, contact Chung-Chi directly with your CV. Interns focus on meaningful research questions, aim to uncover findings that matter, and share insights at top venues — with an HAA moment along the way.
Openings are available now. Email chen@nii.ac.jp with your CV, a brief research statement, and representative publications. JSPS and other fellowship routes are also supported.
No. Our working language is English, and lab members come from more than ten countries. Japanese is not required for research or daily lab life (though Tokyo is a great place to learn!).
Anything within our three pillars: LLM-based agent architectures, information retrieval for agents, higher-order thinking augmentation, high-stakes decision-making (finance, law, policy), LLM-mediated communication, misinformation and forward-looking statement verification, and the societal impact of agents. See the Research page for details.
